Maybe you’ve seen this one but I just found it and thought it was quite nifty. There really is no reason to get lost in Korea if you have a smartphone with your GPS enabled. There is always a catch, however. There is no English on Daum maps. However, you can still find your way around quite easily. (And learn some Hangul, people…it’s not difficult!)

Here’s a quick rundown of the coolest features. I neglected to show you the ‘mark my location’ button. It’s the one on the maps screen, lower left that looks like the cross hairs in a rifle scope. It will mark your location and follow it quite well. You can then fire up street view and navigate around. Check it out:

For either Apple products or Android, ‘Jihachul’ is the best application for the subways in Korea. Designed for people who do not read Korean, it has a full range of functions I haven’t seen on a multitude of other apps. The Romanization and spelling of Korean places and names is excellent.

If you prefer it in Korean language, it also has that, as well as Japanese and Chinese. It has a real-time schedule for the next train coming, express vs snail trains, etc. One cool function is that if you have to transfer, it’ll tell you which car to get in so that you can exit the car right at the escalator leading to your transfer area!

Available offline. Just download the database for any of the five major subways in Korea and you’re off. My brother was just visiting and as a stranger to Korea and Korean language, he was able to navigate around Seoul with ease. He brought his iPad 2 from the states with no data roaming plan, just Wifi. Korea is kind enough to allow a location finder for travelers. That means his maps function worked well tracking his location without a Wifi or data connection. Try it!
